In this report the bracelet did not record a thing, and the officials claimed,"...Generally, like I've said, I've never seen that happen myself. For the most part, we catch every little incident that's occurred." That's right, everything such as a pant leg, sock or even a thin sheet getting between the bracelet during dormancy. The innocent are fighting tooth and nail for liberty while the delinquents kick back with a cold one. The use of junk science in our courts does not bring anyone to justice, but merely exploits how the lack of integrity and zeal amongst the legal community are causing harm to not only the offender, but their families as well.

I would like to thank you for your blog. I have been looking for anybody else that has had problems with scram. We live south of Dallas in a very courrupt county. My husband had the scram braclet placed in April of 2005 and it has not been removed due to the amount of false positive results from scram. He has had to serve two four days in jail, one six days in jail and nine months at a half way house for felons. He has been called in by the probation office to leave work 12 other times and drilled by his probation officer and her superior for an hour to a hour and a half, inorder to get him to admit to something he did not do. Weather it be an obstruction or a so called proven alcohol consumption. Sometimes his braclet gets so loose it falls down to his heel and until he gose to get it readjusted it will show up to be a tamper. One time he developed a bad rash and then the skin started bleeding when he went to the probation office they refused to switch it to his other leg we had to hire a attorney. False positive readings and so called tampers have resulted in revocation of probation then reinstated after nine months at a half-way house then four months after that, scram showed an obstruction so they said "Well we can't prove that you drank, however we will never know if you did'nt drink". so to teach my husbad a lesson they gave him another four days in jail. Two of the times it registered a false positive my husband was clocked in at work. The other ten or so times he was at home with me, me being the only witness, which did not matter to them at all. He has had his braclet changed four different times due to errors with the braclet. Now they have revoked his probation once again due to scram and he is currently in jail awaiting court tomorrow. I think that scram might help some people but it has screwed up our lives. We don't understand why our judicial system is allowing this company (scram) to continue to rape us of our money and time. When there have been many proven cases that inocient people are going to jail everyday because of a device that was set up to fail. Upon reading the SCRAM tether by Dennis N. Powers and Daniel Glad it states that "Hawthorne, the inventor of the SCRAM tether, admitted as much during testimony in the case, noting that there are simply too many factors that cannot be controlled, therefore precluding use of the SCRAM tether as a quantitative evidentiary tool. It is only to be used as a screening device". It is a bad cycle, our county is helping SCRAM get rich by placeing their device on people on probation at our expense, and SCRAM is helping our county get rich by providing inaccurate results that help place people back in court and in jail stuck paying more fees. I hope more people start speaking out, about SCRAM and maybe our court system will stop seeing green and start seeing the injustice of this.
Interesting stuff on this site. Today is march 29th. I got my SCRAM on 2 days ago. My problems started the second i was sentenced to it. My probation officer, FULLY AWARE THAT I ONLY HAD A CELL PHONE, told me the device needed to be plugged into the wall once a day, leading me to believe she meant, electrical outlet, not phone outlet. She then informed me of the cost, which was WAY more than i had expected. I had figured on around 250, 300... but 472 to start and 372 each month after? Yeah. Killing me, and at this point, their was no going back! When i went to H.A.S. in eastpointe, mi., i was informed that i needed the phone line. My moms boyfriend has a business line in the basement, but that is through WOW... and their system isn't compatible with WOW or Comcast. Great. I am informed that i must NOW come in 3 times a week to download data at their office. My license is suspended, and thats a bit of a drive for me. Next, I tell th lady, i travel for work, thats why i asked (yeah, stupid move, i know now) for this device. She tells me that i cant even take the modem on the road with me, as it will not work in a hotel, because most dial 9 to get an outside line. *sigh* I knew i was getting screwed right there, but i was still feeling confident that this would not be THAT terrible. Until i got to the sheet about not using certain items. Thats when i knew this was going to get hairy. I work around all sorts of chemicals in my job. I don't know what im around half the time, since im a salvager in shut down plants, like the GM validation center in Pontiac. I get to the point where the woman is putting the anklet on me, and i wore my work boots in, since those are what i normally wear. She tells me they wont work. I tell her without them I CANT WORK, and with what i pay THEM, their is no way i can buy new boots anytime soon. She tells me she is going to put it on loose, and to be extra careful not to get anything between the tether and my skin. *sigh* Without my boots on my legs must stay horizontal or it falls to my foot. When i wear the boots, it leaves deep indents on my skin. Super. Well... when i saw how shady this device was, i started trying to figure out ways to protect myself, since my lawyers advice to get a blood test or a PBT if i had a false positive is impossible to take, and this site is what i find. I am quite nervous about failing, as i have horrid luck, and know that their is no possible way i can afford to fight any sort of probation hearing with my level of debt. I have been played for a fool by the system, as their is no way to take the alternative of daily PBTs, in house OR at the Royal Oak courthouse, since i travel. I wish i had done research before getting this option. Now im poor, nervous, and angry.
One question to end this if i may... I have tattoos on both calves, inner and outer on one... Do you know if this affects the obstruction readings? The tats are grayish, with skin showing on one leg, and DARK on the other... so this may affect the reflection. If so... I give the hell up. THANKS!
To my knowledge, tatoos have not been carefully studied, allthough it is said that differences in epidermal tissue are accounted for in the initial read (when they put it on). However, I have yet to find any research on alcohol readings (muted or accelerated) or obstructions with differences in skin type, tatoos or other skin conditions. I can only wonder if dead skin from the abrasion was the cause for the read that resulted in a conviction?? Dealing with H.A.S., you will find that they are not professional, will lie to further their cause, and will not comply with the Sixth Amendment-Notice of Accusation, thus you will not be informed of a positive (false or not) with reasonable certainty that you can create a defense with a PBT. I would suggest EtG, but if you are working around chemicals, hand sanitizer etc... it will only corroborate. The good news, 80% of wearers make it through without a problem, and I'am confident a third of the remaining 20% are guilty, so there is a good chance to escape the injustice-Good Luck

Hey, thanks for the response... the last line... the 80/20 thing kinda put my mind a bit more at ease. I actually just got home from SCRAM, and i was listening to one of the ladies falsely explain a few things about the SCRAM, and then tell the guy he shouldnt even know what a spike in his system means. They actually told him to stop calling them with questions, because every time the man called about anything regarding his worries about the tether, they reported it to his P.O. I understand not wanting to give out to much information, as to avoid scammers, but he, like many of us, are worried about all the products on the market that can read false positive. She told him if he was really worried, ask a STORE PHARMACIST about it, as it was not HAS's responsibility to inform him what chemicals can show the positive readings.She also tried to tell him that a P.O. would get with him within a day if he did test positive. We left about the same time, so i informed him a bit how the tether works, and i directed him towards your blog for a less biased opinion... or at least a view from the other side. I know i shouldn't have done that in front of the HAS people, but i cannot stand hearing the company line given, when it is misleading, mis informative, and when it just causes a person more stress, and leaving the person with nowhere to ask questions. Once again, thanks for the Blog. its been a nice source of information.
P.S. it was kinda funny that she inadvertently let out a little slip of potentially big info... I am going out of town for possibly 2 weeks with no way or no where to download. She told me to make sure i downloaded the day i was leaving, because if not the memory could get full... and not be able to record my stats. I figured, of all the benign things they could say, that must have been one of the dumbest things to say to someone going out of town. Its not really info i feel like testing, but it was just humorous to me what they would let slip.

I have had my Scram unit of for about 2 months now and for the most part have only had a few problems until lately. First thing that happened was that when i showered water got in it, so i had to go in and get a new one put on. Now all of a sudden I am getting reads that i have been drinking. The times that these reads are very ridiculous also. The occur when i am sleeping. One of the first readings happened at 5 in the morning and lasted all the way to 8:30 in the morning. The next alcohol reading came four days later and went from 7 in the morning to 8 in the morning. Now i have to go back to court because they are saying i violated my probation. I have witnesses for both times that the scram unit said i was drinking.
I dont understand how they can tell if you drank something or if it got on your skin, since it measures in sweat.
Any help would be greatly appreciated with what i should do
I am completely exasperated at how inaccurate my scram device has proven to be. I have had scram on for about 3 months now. During this three month period, I have had 3 different bracelets. My first bracelet worked fine for a couple of weeks and then started showing signs of tampering. I got called into A&D at least 5 different times during a 2 week period to have them investigate for signs of tampering. When they found no signs, they then said my core temperature was reading too low and accused me of submerging it to hide readings. This was not the case. I have in no way ever submerged my device, I have only taken showers and am careful to dry it off after each time. Finally, they switched this bracelet out and gave me a new one and a new modem. Surprisingly, the second bracelet worked fine. I had no problems with it at all. That's when I knew something had to change. They called me in one day and out of the blue gave me a new one saying that there was a software update. I was a little skeptical, but what could I do about it? That was 2 weeks ago. Since I have had the new bracelet (which they put on way too tight and is causing sores on my ankle, and when I asked if they could loosen it, they said the guy who does that is on vacation and it would be a few more days) I have once again shown signs of tampering, problems communicating with the modem, and just recently I had a false positive reading. This reading occurred just after I got home from a 12 hour shift! I got off work at 6am and went to bed promptly at 6:30am, and then got a false positive for alcohol consumption from 7 - 9:30am. I am completely beside myself. I don't know what to do. I have been clean and sober for 99 days now and in that time period I have been accused several times of drinking, tampering, and other serious accusations. Furthermore, I never received any paperwork on my scram device. I don't know what I can and can't use, I don't even know when my download time is. They told me I need to stand by my modem during my download time, but upon several requests by me to find out when that time is, nobody can seem to tell me!!! I was told if I didn't drink and paid my fines all would be fine. This has not proven to be the case. The very device which is designed to prevent me from drinking is driving me to it!!! I am completely beside myself and not for sure how to proceed.
We are gathering data to stop this nonsense. please if you really want answers or help please provide your contact email- that way we can discuss getting us all together. alone we will lose- together we can fight.

I hot arrested today in my 9:30am Accounting class because i was "tampering" with my device the day before for 18 hours. They said that I deliberately placed something in between the device and my skin for 18, 10 of which I was working for my dad who paid for the device to be put on. This SCRAM device is a SCAM device! To top it off the judge placed a $5000 bail and told me just because I had a lawyer doesnt meen I can get away with everything. AHHHHHHHHHHH!
i was arrested on domestic v. my wife didnt want to press charges but they took me anyway. as a condition of my pretrial release i should have no-contact with my family and i have a scram on my ankle. i have to download at 2am everynight can they tell were i plug the device such as my house?
You should have set up a phone number with them, yes they can tell where you upload from.
I am so thankful that I have found a site where there are others experiencing the same problems. My boyfriend is sitting in jail accused of tampering with the SCRAM. This is the third time they have accused him of this. He had repeatedly called his probation officer telling him the device did not work properly and they told him repeatedly that it was fine. His probation officer does not want to hear anything. I'm at a loss of what to do. He was at work when he supposedly tampered with this. That was four days ago. He goes to alochol cousneling three times a week meets with his probation officer regularly and once when he was accused of tampering with it, he was even with his alcohol counselor. Actually, the device probably did work properly as in my case. A sock, pant leg or simply the tether fell down the leg an inch can read as a tamper. To prove he was not drinking or create doubt, a sock, cardboard, saran wrap and a black trash bag all failed to mask an actual drinking episode during AMS's research. Was there alcohol detected?

This is my first time visiting this site. I have had the scram on for three months now. I live in New Orleans and they did change mine once due to "maintnence proceedures"... Yea right. I am not on probation nor did I get a dwi. I have this on because I was accused of picking up my daughter from school drunk. This is obserb. I had 102 fever and drank niquil. I did not drive myself to pick her up but did go into the school to check her out as she also had fever and a nose bleed. I was delerious from the fever and I'm sure I appeared intoxicated but I can assure you I had not been drinking and did not drive there or home. With the help of my so called father- who is a hibitual pot smoker- told OCS that I was an oblivious drunk always falling down drunk, driving drunk and what ever else he threw in there. They took custidy of my daughter in Dec. 2006. Still in state custidy I to have a SCRAM. I think both OCS and this SCRAM are SCAMS. Money rackets. I am not a criminal. Now OCS is also hair testing me for drugs at my expence... I am a single parent not a criminal and I can not afford a lawer so this saga continues at my expense... Please help!!!
Sounds you need a lawyer, without actual evidence a good lawyer would eat that up in court. I know financing it is tough, but you're going to pay one way or another.

I'm so glad to have found this blog, although not thrilled to hear what some of you are experiencing with the ineffectiveness of SCRAM. I have been holding up alright, starting on my third week with this device. I got called into the office 3 days after I got it to "exchange" the one I had. And once I got a phone call saying the download didn't go through and I would need to do it manually. Knock on wood, I have yet to hear of tampering reports or drinking incidences. I am being quite cautious causing me to have incredible paranoia and desires to crack open a bottle of sweet red wine. GEEEZZZZ! I actually am adorning two lovely anklets. The SCAM and GPS--all due to DUI I got on spring break. I can't go anywhere or drink anything on this beautiful labor day. Oh, the time will pass. I just got my device yesterday and I am scared to death - not as scared as with being in jail in solitary 24/7.
I am such a scrawny person even the P.O. wasn't sure if it would stay on me correctly. This will be as stressful as jail. No one believes anything any of us say, anyway, so tell me how to do this.
I have had my device on for 7 months now. I haven't drank once in those 7 months however I have gotten about 5 harrassing phone calls from the SCRAM people accussing me of drinking. One time was when I was playing tennis with my Dad!!! I just got a call last night saying that I had an obvious consumption and they were going to file a report with the state's attorney. They claim on Saturday night I was drinking. I have 15 people who were with me at that time and they all know about my ankle bracelet and saw me drinking Sprite. I am getting so fed up with this. What happens when I get a "positive reading" and I am home alone with no witnesses??? Has anyone had these false readings reported to the court and what was the outcome when this happened??? Thanks for your help.
I was convicted of "obstruction" however no alcohol detected, because there was none consumed. Even their study showed a black trash bag, sock, saran wrap and cardboard all failed to mask a drinking episode. I beat the so-called "confirmed consumption" with credible witnesses. I'd suggest find the cause of the read and avoid it at all cost. Unfortunately my obstruction could have been pants, sock or dead skin from the abrasions (yeah AMS, I still have the pictures) the bracelet caused.

I have 15 people I was with who will all testify for me that I wasn't drinking. How many people did you have testify for you? Any recommendations? Thanks for your words of encouragement!
Was charged with both, and this is treated as typical allegations: arraignment then weeks later a hearing and a month later sentencing. I had 2 witnesses and 2 affidavits, 2 of my witnesses were the business owners for I had worked 14 hours at 2 jobs that day. One of which had a liquor license, perjury in a case such as this would cost her not only her livelihood but her investment. The obstruction was a different story, happened after my shower while at home with my then 2 year old daughter. However that was 4 years ago, today they have to be aware the ongoing claims of the devices reliability. One thing, this device says it read something, that I believe, it does work it just cannot distinguish between incidental contact and consumption. Good Luck!
when you were cleared of the "positive consumption" did they basically just drop it as if nothing happened or did the judge instill anything else on you? i.e. another month of wearing the bracelet.

sorry about that, i saw conviction and got a little confused. i am just nervous, frustrated, etc etc with this whole thing. i am looking forward to moving on with my life and learning from this whole process rather than living this nightmare.
Certainly understandable, been there. The whole reason I published my research is because I believe had I this knowledge at the time of my hearing I would have created reasonable doubt. Science that does not meet the standards of Daubert has no place securing convictions.
Well... word has come back that after the state's attorney read all 13 letters I got from the people I was with on my supposed "drinking night" that they are willing to cut a deal. All of the letters state that I WAS NOT drinking on the night I am being accussed of. The SCRAM claims I drank from 9 PM - 7:30 AM with a peak TAC of .05! Thats a long time of drinking to be at that low of an alcohol reading. But the State's Attorney will grant me a deal of dropping this if I agree to an additional two months of wearing this thing. I have already worn it for almost my full sentence of 9 months! I was supposed to be done in April! This is RIDICULOUS. My lawyer tells me we can go to a hearing, but because it is a parole violation not a criminal violation the judge just has to find a ponderance of evidence not beyond a reasonable doubt. And most of the time the judges will side with the SCRAM because they believe it is a reliable device. Obviously, if they didn't think it was reliable they wouldn't sentence people to wear it and then they wouldn't make alllll this money off of it. This is absolute corruption at its best. So frustrating, I don't know what to do. Any thoughts?
Facing jail, the fight almost seems a dumb move, but I'd check into a physiologist. They can prove the read is not a drinking episode because the human body cannot metabolize alcohol in this manner. With the witnesses and scientific proof it will create reasonable doubt. Your read is indicative to most false-positives, that is they last 8 to 16 hours. There has been a problem in the past with water accumulating in the bracelet, ethanol is miscible with water which may explain the retarded diffusion and again help create doubt. How long have you worn this particular unit? The longer the term the more susceptible to erroneous reads.
I have had this same unit on since July 11, 2008, with a week and a half break between Dec 31 to Jan 12 when I was on vacation. They then put the same unit back on. I also heard that if you didn't eat all day that could also cause problems as all I ate that day was breakfast around noon. It is ridiculous. However, my lawyer told me that for probation violations the judge just has to find evidence that I was drinking not proving beyond a reasonable doubt. I am supposed to be getting engaged in a month and a half and this thing is just becoming a nightmare. I don't want to take this deal and then have it go off again for some reason!
Marcellus...I read your article you recently posted. Do you know where SCRAM has specifically stated that alcohol is airborn?? This is what I have been saying all along! This gives ample proof of the reason my device went off when it did being that I was in a small, one bedroom apartment, with all windows shut (due to the cold) and we squished 15 people in there to watch the fight on Pay Per View, most of whom were drinking.
Where does SCRAM specifically say, I actually had to think a minute before my reply, how about the contract you signed, how about their "White Paper", they claim they can tell the difference between a drinking episode and environmental exposure, yet you had to sign a contract stating you would refrain from using products containing ethanol. Let us not forget the device is non-specific, meaning other forms of alcohol and a slew of things such as yeast will register as well.
I have had my scram for all of 7 days, and already my case mgr says it showed an alcohol incident - I said absolutely not - rechecked some of my products only to find more "...ol" s in there - so I am bringing them all in. I may get nailed for admitting to cooking sherry - but I honestly thought it had all burned off - hopefully they won't jump down my case. the other thing I asked was what exactly is the pulse that comes out - electric, laser - what and he didn't know - wht's that about?
this is insanity - then I go in and they give me a BA - isn't that redundant?
All I have to say is DO NOT be around alcohol. Its just not worth it. The device can and will pick up alcohol from the outside environment. If you are at a bar or around people drinking just leave. Thats what I have now had to do for the past 2 months. I have 1 month left and will maintain being a hermit for the time being. It sucks but thats the only way I won't have to go back to court.
I was convicted for wearing socks, or pants, possibly string from a towel or dead skin from my abrasion! These are the only possible artifact that registered as an obstruction.
i have been wearing scram for 39 days. i work as a bartender and so far it hasn't picked up any alcohol. however,i had a tampering incident from a pair of socks going between the scram and my leg and now we are having download problems.This little beauty costs me 168.00 every two weeks plus the cost to have it put on. i have till june 23rd and hopefully won't have any more problems.
Hi everyone. I was on the scram monitor for about 4 days and then chose to have it taken off, as I had a choice to either have the scram or participate in our states 24/7 sobriety program, which in itself is a major pain. I have to go to the county jail and take a pbt test twice a day for a year!!! I must say though, that it is much better than the scram monitor. It caused me so much anxiety and physical pain. it was heavy and would sit on my ankle bone. It also caused a huge rash in only 5 days. I was so obsessive about any products that i used. I called my officers numerous times a day and they were clearly irritated. I dont care though. If I violated, I would go straight to jail. Does anyone know if I need to be paranoid about anything I eat with the pbt's?. I do not want to fail this. I have been sober for many months. I am also on electronic monitoring for house arrest! I will be so happy when this all goes away. I must say that it has scared me from ever drinking again. I just think that there has to be a better way than the scram monitor.
Pbt's are non-specific as well. Avoid eating yeast or smoking products right before the test and most likely you'll be fine. Inhalants, don't clean windows right before or use hand sanitizer. This is a far better option for you will know right away if there is a positive and be able to have further tests and you are face to face with the monitoring officer.

I was also wondering if ingesting vinegar could make you fail a breathalizer test?
Well, the devices are non-specific, avoid sucking down vinegar before the test! However, an EtG test will prove positive. They say even food made with wine will show, I believe this is more an atomic test than a consumption test, but the courts still use them. Justice doesn't create revenue!
I want to leave town for the weekend, I failed to get permission from my Probation officer, I know it's not the best of ideas, but it's a family emergency. My question, will SCRAM show that I left the state for a couple of days? I have to go in and download on Monday, which is no problem, I'm just paranoid perhaps about what all this thing can do.

Thank you for the blog, first of all... it's calming to know that people are talking about this SCRAM device. I had mine put on today, and learned today that I could not use any products, what-so-ever, that contained alochol (mouth wash, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, hand sanitizers, lotion etc) and could not be in a room where products with ammonia were being used. Here is the problem....
I am a registered nurse and I use antimicrobial foaming hand rub all the time at work (as hospital policy, and any peer review shows that antimicrobial hand sanitizers are more effective in preventing spread of certain germs, including C. DIFF). Is there any way that my usage of antimicorbial foaming hand rub (with 62.5% ethyl alcohol) cause me to be false positive (esp with an ankle device? It seems to me that the area would be too far away for it to pick up... but who knows.
In addition, patients are frequently discharged off my unit and the housekeepers use cleaning agents such as bleach and other agents that produce noxius fumes. I was told that I was not allowed to be in a room where fumes produced by cleaning agents are strong. And, not only do the housekeepers use the cleaning agents, but I will also, if I spill blood etc. Does this often create a false-positive?

They tell you to stay away from it, the initial and still one of the only researches shows a wearer that had a read because they worked in an area where alcohol was used to clean computer circuitry. They referred to this as an anomaly. Plenty of radio waves for you as well, but you probably know EtG is a near guaranteed false-positive, and with this contraption it is time/date stamped. Cameras, witnesses & the fact they can't ask you to stop working should make a read an easy defeat, get the media involved, they love it. One case the girl was allowed to model, then taken to court (proven hairspray), prosecuter tried to say she drank little bits at a time for 13 hours!
Good thing they are allowing me a one week trial run with this, to see if the antibacterial hand sanitizer that I use at work will interfere. If it does, I will probably be switched to something called the "sobrietor".
Do you think I could make a case for hospital equipment interference when the device is battery powered? Have there been reports of these little guys causing interference?

Unfortunately, water accumulating in the sensor (ethanol is miscible with water) has been the escape goat, I don't believe one week is the time needed to do any integritous research which has been their shortcoming for 5 years.

I'd say it is better than SCRAM but again it won't distinguish the difference between Windex and vodka. Unfamiliar with the read outs, if they are reading higher than the SCRAM's .08 then a definite upgrade. AMS took me to court on a read, yet nobody knows what it was, just that it was over .08, could have been 7.08!!

I received a summons today to appear in court next week. The papers did not even include what the appearance would be for. I have been on the Scram bracelet for 2 months now. This is the second time that I have been notified of violation of the bracelet. The 1st was just a failure to download. I just received a prerecorded phone call for that violation, "no biggy." Today when I called the court house to find out why I had to appear, I was informed it was a violation from Scram. I then called Scram. I asked what the violation was and when it occurred. She informed me that the violation was tampering. Then inferred that I had stuck something between the bracelet and my skin. I have a witness that know that I was not drinking. I know this does not matter because our judicial system fails all the time and has already convicted me of this DUI that I was innocent of. I have come to terms with the fact I was found guilty of the DUI. How am I supposed to come to terms with being violated for something that I did not do? My bracelet is often too tight or way too loose. I also suffer from the scratches and cuts caused by the bracelet. I am a 36 yr old female. I know that water weight and bloating are causing the scratches and cuts. I think it has also caused the tampering violation. The only way something was placed in between is if it happened while I was sleeping. What have you found out with your inquiries?

I started this blog because had I the knowledge then I do now I couldd have created doubt. I was convicted only to wonder if it was dead skin from the abrasions. During testing conducted by AMS a black trash bag, sock, saran wrap and cardboard all failed to mask a drinking episode. While the read was slighly muted, alcohol was still detected. I am so glad to find this website my fiance is now serving 7 days for a false positive. the day he was suppose to be drinking we were watching movies at home and I had made dinner I had used pam cooking spray to make french bread they say that would have done however I later looked on the label and it said grain alcohol on it. My daughter is on the scram bracelet,the police picked her up from her job at 10:00am and was taken to jail. I was told the bracelet had a "confirmed consumption" of alcohol from the previous day from noon until 7:00 pm and tampering. She attended ADOA classes twice a week, and is dropped off and picked up from her new job daily, and her husband and two year old daughter were with her that whole time.Her husband said she was doing the dishes at noon, and noticed a strong odor from the litter box in the kitchen. I would like to know how we can go about making sure this isn't what recorded as to the "air" quality reported on the bracelet. She had been sitting for 6 days since Mother's day. Any help would be appreciated.
I am not certain cat urine contains ethanol, but these devices are non-specific meaning there is a list of non-alcohol related artifact that can cause an erroneous read. Acetone, yeast and isopropyl just to name a few. However many household cleaners, scratch that, most household solvents contain some form of alcohol.
To fight scientific evidence you need to challenge the science. You will need a copy of the read and it's possible a physiologist can prove that alcohol isn't possibly digested in the manner the read stated. Depending the read of course.
I agreed to wear the scram device as part of a plea bargain for my first offence ever my dui reduced to reckless driving . My attorney says just dont drink and wear it for for months no big deal! Well i am so remorsful for taking the bagain this device is a daily 24/7 nightmare! And then she tells me i have to get a magnet to reset it as per her instructions..not very proffesional.. I've been on the SCRAM monitor since Dec. 21, 2010 because I got a theft charge and was sentenced to 5 years differed adjudication probation. I did something really stupid like drank the day of getting it put on so the probation officer told the judge and now theres a warrent for my arrest. I don't know what's going to happen to me. Admitting your wrong is a step in the right direction, judges usually take that into consideration, especially that early in your probationary period. I consider most of my responders guilty at the get go, unfortunately I follow them through litigation and really believe most of them to actually be innocent. It will take a pair, but if you claim an alcoholism that can be beat, you may get a chance depending on the severity of your offense. I would highly suggest laying off the sauce and getting your stuff together, it isn't that bad after a year or so.

I have had scram on for 6 months with absolutly no problems, I habe paid in full and akways download trying to to the best I can. Well i visit my PO today and she informs me I have a confimed tampering betweern the hours of 10 am and 9 pm well I own my own restaraunt and have video footage acurately showing myself not doing anything with the braclets. Now she is threating revoking and a number of other thing for an offense i didnt create. Im not saying im innocent or never did anything wrong but in this case i havent and its not right for human error to have this kind of effect on domeomes life
Don't just use the video, use witnesses as well (something I wish I had), you are trying to prove your innocence which is "virtually" impossible.
I too have problems with my scram I have had in on almost 2 months am due to have it off in two weeks.

I was called last week by the people that put my lovely scram device on, claiming I had been drinking from 7:30pm to 8:30pm, now mind you I was in bed due to the fact I get up at 2:00am for work. When I went in the supplier he was a total ASS!!! I told him I was redy willing and able to take a polygraph to prove I am not lyingn he told me "these are like a polygraph because they don't lie"
If I go back in front of my judge he has already told me that he will revoke my probation and I will do my back-up of 7 years. I am 56 years old and have many severe and painful health problems concerning my legs and back. I also have acute gout in knees and feet. This scram bracelet has caused a giant sore on my ankle. Went to emergency room for a gout attack and doctor said this device is WAY TOO TIGHT. Called SCRAM and was told they could'nt really do anything until I went to court. As a result I have been putting first baby oil between my skin and device. Did'nt help. Second I tried vasoline.Helped a little. Next I tried Vicks. BINGO. I am wondering if this triggers a tamper reading. Any comments ? Also, have been on a sourdough pretzel kick and have been eating english muffins daily. I was'nt aware that these could cause a false positve until reading this site. Also, my leg is now peeling underneath the tether and smells like rotting flesh. GREAT!
An obstruction has to occur for six hours before it is reported, however becareful what you use there. These devices are non-specific.

I had my scram device on for 4 months and there are several things to know.Never put anything underneath it wear low cut socks, always dry off after shower over and under as soon a u shower, never ever swim or take a bath.. Do not use anything that has any form of alcohol externally as well as internally, Cleaning produst soap and hair product perfume and deodrant,, needs to be modified. I USED VINEGAR PLEDGE AND AMMONIA AND COMET ONLY TO CLEAN.i GAVE UP PERFUM AND FOUING ALCOHOL FREE FRAGRANT OILS. hAD TO LOOK FOR DIFFERENT SHAMPOO AND SO ON SO FORTH. yOU NEED TO BE IN THE SAME ROOM WHEN YOUR DEVICE IS DOWNLOADING... I was pulled over about three weeks ago and arrested for possible DUI...I truly believe I was no where near the legal limit (2 beers)I was arrested anyway for DUI and spent 6 hrs in jail, released @ 3am and even tho, I haven't been to court or been found guilty, but regardless, I had to report to a PO by 845am the same morning..they placed this bracelet on my ankle and has caused nothing but interference with my everyday life, budget, hygiene, cleaning my house...everything! I hate everything bout this bracelet EXCEPT the fact I can't DRINK alcohol! I am a single mother of 2 children and already on a very tight budget...the $400/mnth is killing me and I haven't been to court yet...I agree I shouldn't have drove after drinking even 1 beer, but I honestly thought it was innocent until proven guilty and since I can't even get my blood results until my court day (little over a month after the DUI) and AT LEAST until then I have to wear this bracelet. That's $84/wk! It's 4 days til Christmas and luckily they have an awesome father who stepped in and pretty much got their entire Christmas:) Anyway, have u ever tried shaving underneath one of these bracelets!? Im terrified to even touch the thing with all the complaints I have read about it! As if I don't have to worry enough about paying the bills and upcoming court fees...5k for a good attorney....I gotta worry bout the shampoo I use, can't wear perfume, even had to get new toothpaste...replacing all that wasn't cheap because you wouldn't believe the things you use to keep yourself clean that contain alcohol...I didn't think it was that big of a deal after I read the rules and left the office, but when I got home to check the labels....just about everything had it in there! I have been on the theater now for 9 months , first a I was on it for 6 months 2 weeks before I was to be taking of it they said I was drinking a .02 I was not drinking .Then they made me wear it for another 30 days .Two days before I was to get off that they said I was tampering with it now I am under house arrest for 60 days and the coast is driving me to bankruptcy . I just got my SCRAM unit today. does anyone know if shampoo that has a type of alcohol in the ingredients will read positive since it most likely will run down your leg while showering. My face wash has alcohol too. The man who put my bracelet on said a woman was cleaning her tub and got a false reading because of the cleaning product. I have been sober for over a year but, still tying up some legal matters. Nervous that a stupid mistake could take away my freedom. I am only getting my unit read once a week at probation so, I won't have any feedback for a week or so. I would greatly appreciate any answers. I can't even find shampoo that doesn't have alcohol of some type in the ingredients. I know the further down in the list of ingredients, the less of the ingredient the product contains so, I bought the sh. with alcohol furthest down on the list. I guess i'm just nervous about this thing after reading some of the horror stories here and other places. Probation assured me that he can tell the difference between consuming alcohol and coming in contact with it but, don't want to take any chances.

Thank you, I called probation back today and he assured me he can tell contact from consumption so, let's hope so. Spent all morning cleaning my house and most of the cleaning supplies don't have an ingredient list. They just tell you that it doesn't contain anything dangerous so, i'll keep my fingers crossed. I wore gloves and boy, do I wish I had enough cash for a maid but, that is unrealistic so, I guess I have to clean my own house. Also, for about three hours after I got this thing put on it went off about every 10 mins and then slowed down to about every 1/2 hour. I inquired about this too today and he told me it was normal. Then why yesterday when I left probation did he tell me that it would only go off about every 1/2 hour. This thing just leaves a lot of questions to be answered. I also see footage of irritation this thing causes the leg. I know it's only been a day but, mine is actually not uncomfortable at all. Is this thing going to give us cancer or what? lol

SCRAM doesn't detect pot, I would stay away from lotions for the device is non-specific, meaning other artifact will trigger a read.

I have been on the scram for a little over a month and was granted permission to attend a pharmacy study... The rescue medication contained alcohol and now I have court and since I was dismissed because I had to use the rescue meds. I do not have actual clinical records only my admit because I washed out and my depart for being ineligible for the study. The rescue med was a derivitave sp? of a Cold and Flu OTC like Tylenol cold and flu, should I be violated and potentially facing my back up when I was allowed and encouraged to do the study to help offset the cost of the darn thing in the first place plus I was sick as a dog afterward had trouble sleeping from anxiety and I used NyQuil to finally get some rest... I am hosed I think bc it was not N alcohol drinking episode but what I consumed contained alcohol which is a violation how do i approach this one? mcclainv@hotmail.com

I have had the SCRAM on for 4 months. For the 1st month at a different place than now. They only uploaded me 1 time a wk. And all was fine. I went to a dif place cuz it was $4 cheaper. The place now is downloading me 2x's a wk. Like all the HORROR stories above they are NOW saying I have tampered with my device between 7p.m to 6 a.m. They said @ the time of tampering it detected very small traces of alcohol. I got off of work at 6 p.m was sitting watching tv at 7 p.m. after dinner bed by 10..SLEEPING TIL 7 a.m. I feel like I'm going crazy..I am wearing this device to have a red license & paying $380 a mnth for this piece of shit!!!! WTF??..And the worst part about it is I NEVER DRINK..even before or why I have to wear this stupid device. I pay a shitload of money for this..if I didn't want to pay that much n wanted a drink I just wouldn't wear it. I would simply have them take it off of & deal with NOT having a license til July. This is complete & utter BS. I don't know what to do ??..but I do need to keep my drivers. I went and paid extra money to get a ETG to prove to those assholes there is no alcohol in my system. Sounds like a typical false-positive, usually last for 10 to 13 hours! Interested in the EtG though, that test can read if you use hand sanitizer!
I am not going to be helpful to anyone but you may get a chuckle. I have one that I go and get read at a "community service" place.A Private contractor for pre-trial. I f with them by resetting it constantly with a powerful magnet. She is baffled by this mystery.I wouldn't advise anyone does this as I am going to jump bail anyways and move out of country. But I am also taking it off and having a fiend drop it off for me so I don't have a felony charge waiting if I ever return. I have also asked who in our government gets the envelope of cash or if it comes as a campaign contribution. She didn't get the question.

Last night I thought I was drinking a Busch NA and inadvertently drank about 2/3s of a regular Bush beer. I regularly enjoy a couple of NAs after work and have been on this bracelet for exactly 2 months with no problems. I am concerned and wonder if you would know what the SCRAM report would show. I usually download in a 10 day interval. How long does the SCRAM memory go if it reads in 15 minutes. I have been living a sober life all this time and what transpired was not my intention. Now I need to figure out how to handle it. Can you offer any helpful information
doesn't matter when you report, the anklet records it, however you will be fine just don't fuck with it, I didn't and it caused catastrophe!

My girlfriend was on the Scram bracelet. well her P.o. showed up at the house after the first week, we thought for a routine check this is Tuesday when he enters the house we realize it not. He said there was a spike in the data that confirmed a drinking event last Tuesday at 12 a.m. and asked what we were doing. we replied going to bed the spike lasted till 5 in the morning. I know she wasn't drinking because I was with her the whole time. Then I thought about it, the night before we were going to bed and I thought I will change the sheets the next day cause the smelled a little musty because no one slept there for 2.5 months while she was in jail. well at 10 or 11 that next night I stripped the bed and sprayed Lysol on the mattress and the sheets and we went to bed. I fear that is what gave a positive reading is the possible? her P.O. said no way that it would give a positive reading. She is now back in jail is there any way to fight this. I read that a hail follicle test can be given is this true?
the etg test only goes back 5 days and Lysol will trigger it as well, did you sign a contact stating you will refrain from using such items, perhaps that's leverage!

I recently had an issue with my SCRAM... It has bee less than 72 hrs and I already got a call for accusations of tampering. I looked at the graph and it is apparent that there was something going on, but I had not been anywhere near alcohol, nor had I tampered with my bracelet. Today the guy made it tighter around my lower calf so hopefully this helps. I did find cleaning wipes in my car and I wonder if there was a gas let off from it when the product evaporates. Ammonia does set off the bracelets doesn't it? I did not find these wipes until after I had already talked to the bracelet tech and he had no choice but to report it to the courts.....now I am nervous despite the fact that I did absolutely nothing wrong!!
I have just been accused of a "confirmed consumption". The monitoring company says I consumed alcohol from 4:20 pm on Sunday until 3:40 pm on Monday. I was with my girlfriend all day on Sunday, going to a friend's house around 2 till around 7, went grocery shopping until around 10, and then went to bed - with her the entire time. Monday morning I had to be in court at 8:45 am, and went straight to work after that - I was never even around alcohol for this entire timeframe. According to the accusation, I "consumed" alcohol for a period of nearly 24 hours straight - I have never drank that much in my life! I'm NOT an alcoholic, really never drank all that much, and haven't touched alcohol at all since March (5 months now), it doesn't even make any sense that I would suddenly get the urge to violate a court order for a 24-hr binge ... knowing I would then go to jail! Does anyone have any suggestions for what to do now?
I beat my confirmed consumption with witnesses, sounds you have that, and you went to court, win win. work is a good place to be as well, full of witnesses. plus find out how much the read is, it only reads to .08 which obfuscates the actual amount!!!
I been wearing the bi tad for almost a year and have a year to go... the first one they put on me they had to change because they said it came up as is 0.04.... so they put a new one on.. the way that works is it reads the moisture that comes out of your skin much like the SCRAM bracelet but it does not vibrate and also there is a spring loaded round thing about the size of a nickel that goes up against your skin all you have to do is put saran wrap on your ankle so that moisture doesn't come from your skin and touch the round thing and then get a mixture of water and oil put that on a cotton ball up against the round thing and take the duct tape and tapes a cotton ball to the round thing and then push it up against the bracelet and you'll be fine

It is Thanksgiving 11/26/2015 so no one is working at pretrial. My husband and I went to the neighbors this morning to help cook and eat and we came back home about 10:30-11am and when I walked in the bedroom the black box that I have plugged in to the wall had the red light on and the display read, "test bracelet with magnet". I don't know what that means or why it did it. I unplugged it and plugged it back in and a minute later it was fine and read, "monitoring". I do not know how long the light was red for, I didn't look at the box at all. The only reason I noticed it was because I had to plug my phone in. It wasn't beeping like she said it would if the light turned red. So I called left messages and now I'm afraid I'm going to get in trouble for the thing not working. Why was it doing that and what does that mean for me? I was arrested for assault against my husband for throwing a box of chicken broth across the room during an argument. I had drank the night before but was not drinking that day and I have a DUI on my record from 1 1/2 years ago. So they decided that was a great excuse to suck as much money out of me as they could and put me on SCRAM Or else I would sit in jail. I got the monitor on 10/24/2015. I have only had one issue other than this morning and that was on 11/18/2015 I met with my pretrial officer who told me that 11/12/2015 something was between my skin and the monitor from late afternoon until midnight but there was no alcohol detected. I wear leggings so I can wear boots to cover the monitor and it is possible they got in there for a bit but not continuously. I got my jammies on and was asleep by 10. I was just placed on this on Thursday. And I have had problems with it since telling me I am out of range. I have called my POs on Fridays to get a new main box or something cause something isn't working. I have had problems with it all weekend.I called the emergency number they let me change phone outlets. I get a call today to come into the office. I was accused of lying that I haven't been home this entire time. Now I have my parents and my daughter here as witnesses and they said they would lie for me so I should just tell them the truth now. I'm a homebody like I've never been so mad in my life. I understand I need to be on this for 3 months instead of jail but at least have the device work. They are talking about sending me to jail for something I'm not doing. They told me to stop doing whatever I'm doing letting the dog out or smoking a cigarette which I don't smoke. It makes me mad because I've been mostly in my daughters room or the computer room to make phone calls and I'm being accused of something I'm not doing. I'm not seeing anyone else have this problem but I do see the thing has it faults. Does anyone know what I should do or where I should go from here. I don't want to go to jail for something I'm not doing.

I had the SCRAM bracelet on for three months. Last week they tell me the bracelet was removed for three days! I dont even know how to take the damn thing off and obviously did not drink. Completely beside myself! This needs to stop. There device is 100% inaccurate and ruining peoples lives worse then they are. I just spent three days in jail bc of the scram bracelet reading a false positive and witnesses that know i was not drinking that day...i was with my family and then i had gotten a tattoo on my forearm...the bracelet read that i had drank so much alcohol that it was over the limit of drinking....i didn't drink a drop and payed for something i did not do

Hey there my mom just had a horrible time with scram! I want to contact you! She had a false reading due to a obstruction which was her leggings. She is 90 lbs and gets cold so layers up. The lady said not to worry there are no alcohol violations. After 12 days in jail until her next court date the scram people came to court and didn't know anything about her case. They made it worse and they revoked her probation and gave her a year in jail! The judge had it out for her but the jail said this isn't right and is now on house arrest and a blow machine which the program is amazing! If they have a violation they are called immediately and given the chance to come in and prove they aren't drinking. Our court system is so messed up. I will email you in the morning! I'm up in the middle of the night from a nightmare from all this that has happened to my family. We have to do something about scram!
I have had the SCRAM for two weeks now. No problems yet. My dude that monitors it is cool and said if anything out of the ordinary comes up he'll call me before he reports to p.o. I have to wear it over four and a half years and after reading this blog looks like my chances are slim to none.
I’ve had this scram on for over 4 months.. everything had been going smooth. I went and saw my PO yesterday and she tells me I have probation violation for obstruction of the scram. I have not everything I have been told to do, I don’t want to serve time for this when I have been playing by their rules. It’s ruining my life it worries me constantly and I live on a lake, I didn’t get to swim all summer. I just want to be done with it. I do exactly as they say and still somehow find a way to get me in trouble. I’m in fear of facing time for this.

I've been on what's called the 24/7 program here in Sioux Falls, South Dakota since May 2017. I got a 2nd dui last May, and the judge ordered a year on 24/7. Okay, fine, I can handle that. Participants must drive to the courthouse twice a day, every single day (despite weather, holidays etc - NO EXCEPTIONS) and do a breathalyzer test to prove they haven't been drinking. You can go to the courthouse to "blow" from 5:30 am-9:00 am and then again that day between 530 pm to 9:00 pm. VERY inconvenient. So, the alternative in our county is the SCRAM bracelet, which you only have to download twice a week - so I chose this (MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE) option because it meant driving downtown twice a week as opposed to 14 times.
Long story short: I've never, ever blown anything but zeros, because I have not had a drop to drink since May 19th, 2017. In October 2017, I made the switch from blowing twice a day to getting the ankle monitor (SCRAM) put on. I knew I wouldn't be drinking, so this seemed like a happier alternative to driving across town twice a day every day. The first couple of months were smooth sailing. Then, last Tuesday, BAM, out of nowhere - I stopped at the courthouse on my way to work to download. The SCRAM attendant informed me that my reading from the prior Friday showed a "tampering" event, and that "alcohol was detected" at the same time as the alleged tampering - therefore I would have to sit 12 hours in jail. I was dumbfounded. I thought she was joking. I told her, "Are you kidding me? I'm on my way to work right now! I haven't had anything to drink!" but she had to follow protocol, blah blah. So I get taken down to the jail, have to put on the jail stripes, and I'm sitting there thinking, "Okay, well this is totally unfair, but i'll sit out these 12 hours and then I'll get ahold of my attorney and raise hell." Not even an hour into my 12 hour sentence, the cop from the 24/7 desk comes down to inform me that today's reading showed ANOTHER tampering event along with ANOTHER alcohol detection at the same time. I'm like, "This has to be a joke. You must be joking." He said nope, no joke, so now you have to sit here for 24 hours.
There is no way on God's green earth that these readings were accurate. I did not touch alcohol, I wasn't around alcohol, I worked all day both of the "tampering" days, then picked up my son from daycare, went home, had supper and went to bed. Not once but TWICE in the span of 6 days, this SCRAM monitor suddenly was spitting out false positives.
Needless to say, the minute I got out of jail after that 24 hours, I told them to cut the damn thing off my ankle. I've been driving downtown twice a day to blow since then. It's a pain in the ass, but at least it's accurate!!!!
I was supposed to get my SCRAM off today, but on April 6th I was contacted about a temp change, I provided them with the new medication I started taking and they said ok, I also called my PO that same day and advised her of the incident, she said okay and just check in on 4/20 which I did but, thats when I was told I was drinking from 7:30 pm all the way till 11:00 am the next day. First, the bracelet I had did not work for over two weeks, Meaning I was not downloading or anything, No calls what so ever until about mid month and that was when they wanted payment for the device, the next day it started working. Nothing once said about the weeks of non downloads. now, right when i am about to get the device off "something comes up" I have witnesses that saw me sleeping nearly all weekend due to the medication I was given. I also have to spend $2500.00 becasue they want me to do two weeks of jail time with work release. I said absolutely not, that means i am admitting to drinking, which I have ont had a drink since September of 2017. This Bracelet is corrupt and can not tell the difference between, tampering, drinking, medications and so on.
My wife just got a call from her probation officer and there was a positive reading detected on her scram bracelet. We went to visit my mom during this alleged time and she had been sick so to protect our children from getting anything she sprayed her house down with Lysol. We slept in her bed and left the next day, the scram detected alcohol the entire time we were there and her bac peaked at 0.04 and went back to 0 all in a matter of 12 hours. Now she has violated her probation all because my mom sprayed Lysol everywhere. Such bullshit
